Cats hate water, but in 1797 Trim the Cat was born at sea. The spunky black kitten with white chest and feet fit right in on Matthew Flinders’ ship. Good thing, because in his lifetime Trim would sail all the way around the world!

A brand new statue of Trim’s master was unveiled in London, England. Mr. Flinders deserved a statue! He was the first person to sail all the way around Australia. In fact, he proved it was a continent. He made the first good chart of its coast.

Today we’re used to having all kinds of technology to help us find the places we need to go. We have GPSs. We already know where all the continents are. But Mr. Flinders didn’t even have a map. He had to make one! Imagine what it would be like to have to sail all the way around Australia, just to find out it was an island! Imagine drawing the coast as you sailed. Your picture would be all anyone knew about the shape of the land. How would you know if your picture was right?

In the new statue, Mr. Flinders is kneeling down upon a map. Who is sitting behind his foot? You guessed it—Trim the Cat. In all his labors, Mr. Flinders had a friend.

God is a great Creator. It takes people years and lots of hard work even to discover what He has already done! And sometimes, they aren’t even right! Many wrong maps were drawn before accurate ones came along!

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways!—Romans 11:33
