It’s getting closer . . . and closer . . . and closer …

If it was near your house, this creeping lava would give you the creeps! But the people who live near Mount Kilauea are used to it. This Hawaiian volcano has been erupting for ages—literally.

Have you ever heard someone say that “a watched pot never boils”? It seems true. But scientists watch Mount Kilauea very carefully. Unlike the pot of water, it seems to be boiling constantly. It has erupted 61 times. And those are just the eruptions people wrote down. The most recent one has been going for 30 years!

Imagine volcanos being a normal part of your life. Every now and then, lava would flow toward houses in your neighborhood. It might reach roads. No big deal, right? Wrong! That stuff is 1,200 degrees hot!

People who live near Mount Kilauea have a constant reminder of God’s power. They know they can’t control the volcano. They can only move if lava gets too close to their businesses and homes.

(The Lord) looks on the Earth and it trembles. (He) touches the mountains and they smoke! — Psalm 104:32
